Strategic Importance of the Steel Sector for the Brazilian Economy

27 Sep

The Coordinator of FGV Projetos, Fernando Blumenschein, participated in the meeting in the Instituto Aço Brasil (Brazil Steel Institute) about the strategic importance of the steel industry for the Brazilian economy. The goal of the meeting was to analyze the importance of steel in the country's economy to construct qualitative and quantitative benefits in formulation and strategic policies for the sector.

Five major themes were discussed during the meeting: the importance of steel for the leverage of production chains; conditioning factors in the price of steel in Brazil; steel and development; competitive equality; and industrial policy.

Based on the knowledge generated about the “steel-development-institutions” triangle, the study proposes a framework for the sustained dialogue between the industry and the government, seeking to overcome the disputes and emergency policies which historically mark this relationship.
